Sonny Ming is a 6-year-old boy
with
a
left chin
tumor.
His parents tried
pacifying the gods but rapid enlarge-
ment
resulted.
ln
desperation,
they
went
to
Guangzhou but
were deceived
by
a
ruthless herbalist. With the huge tumor,
he
could hardly
eat. As
they could
not
afford the
$50-60,000
for
surgery
for
the
apparent "blood vessel tumor", his sur-
vival
was estimated
to
be
only
3
months. When
Prof
Xu
of
the Seamen's
Hospital learned
the
news through
a
local
newspaper
in
Nov.
2001,
Ming
was
picked up
300
Km away. Through
the Association,
joint consultation
with
Hong Kong Oncology Specialists
Drs
Ali and Tsao, recognized
the very
rare
"malignant teratoma", an in-born tumor
turned cancerous. As surgery causes
profuse bleeding,
much
disfigurement
and severe dysfunction, a strategy of
first
blocking
off
the
main blood supply
with interventional radiology utilizing
an
advanced DSA
(digital
subtraction
angiography)
technique
shrank the
tu-
mor considerably so that
the
best ster-
eotactic
radiotherapy (3-dimensional
embroidery-like irradiation planned
by
computer) could
be
delivered. Residual
tumors
required
Argon-helium
Cryoablation (cold-burning). Despite
the critical
state
from an unusual
sen-
sitivity
reaction
to a
DSA
agent,
he re-
covered
fully
and
tumor
regressed
completely.
Becoming very active and
cheerful,
he
is so
impressed
that
he
wishes
to
become
a
doctor
himself!
