HOW
TO
MANAGE
A CANCER
PATIENT AT
HOME?
The
word
"cancer"
is
no longer
equivalent to
an
"incurable" disease, as
more and
more
cancer patients
are
cured. Nevertheless, an unwarranted
fear for cancer and cancer patients still
exists.
Some
would even believe that
cancer patients are infectious and try
to stay
away
from them
all the time;
others would have such grave attitudes
that the fighting spirit of the cancer
patient
is
atfected,
regardless of the
curability the
cancer.
As the real cau-
sation of
most
cancers
is
still not
well
documented, especially those arising
in
non-smokers and non-alcoholics, emo-
tions
like
unjustified remorse, excessive
unhappiness on why
the
patient
has
cancer would only jeopardize
the
chances
of
successful management.
ln
fact, clinical studies have shown that
all
those cancer patients having
good
family
support
would
recover
more
promptly; whereas, those without such
input would even have accelerated
worsening of the cancer.
Thus,
unnec-
essary pain and sufiering are added
to
the
already very distressed cancer
patient.
We should avoid
this at all
costs
even
for
those with advanced incurable
cancer
- for
them,
the
remaining life
would
be
the most precious
part of
their
life as the
days
are
already "numbered",
even as most doctors often
try
to avoid
emphasizing
this
fact
to
the
advanced
cancer patients themselves.
