REFRAIN
FROM
ANTIBIOTIC
ABUSE
Antibiotics have often
been
prescribed routinely for common upper
respiratory tract infections
but
90% are
virus infections though antibiotics are
indicated with onset
ol
secondary bac-
terial
infection. Take
the full dose
of
antibiotics
and
finish
the
course, despite
improvement of symptoms. This pre-
vents emergence
of
resistant strains
(e.9., from
development
of
bacterial
enzymes like beta-latamase to inacti-
vate penicillin). Resistant strains spread
to
other patients and even the whole
community with disastrous results. For
those
with
liver
or
kidney deficiency,
avoid antibiotics harmful
to
these
organs.
Even with
those antibiotics with-
out
such
organ
toxicity, the dose
must
be reduced appropriately.
Although
an
antibiotic
is
found
to
be
helpful,
prolonged
use
gives
rise
to undesirable
side
effects, e.g.,
loss of
the normal and
beneficial
bacterial
llora
in
the
large
bowel.
lf
really a prolonged antibiotic
is
required, your doctor may prescribe
a
narrow-spectrum one, even so,
moni-
toring of possible adverse
efiects
must
also
be
done regularly.
Whenever
appropriate, your doctor may decide
to
perform sensitivity tests
by
taking
a
sample of
the
infective material for
culture and then testing
the
pure strain
of
bacteria so grown against several
antibiotics for the best killing
effect.
However, much patience
is
required as
this is a
very
time-consuming
procedure.
