FOR
FLYING
Accustomed to living on lowland,
certain patients may
have problems
flying at high altitudes
-
the air pressure
decreases markedly and oxygen
is
also
deficient. There may be shortness of
breath, headache, dizziness,
nausea,
bluning
of
vision, restlessness followed
by
drowsiness, disturbance
of
consciousness, convulsion and
even
coma. Even normal subjects
may
occasionally have
dizziness,
restlessness, chest discomfort
and
earache, etc.
For
those with infection
of
the middle ear or sinusitis,
a
bottle of
medicinal drops
for
prompt application
as
required
is
handy. For those with
heart
diseases or
high
blood
pressure
or those exceptionally weak physically,
flying
,nay have more serious effects
and
corrgestive
heart
f
ailu
re,
coronarier,
pulmonary hypertension
(high blood pressure occurring at the
arteries
supplying
the
lungs)
and
complications
of
hypertension
not
uncommonly occur. Consult your doc-
tor before flying. ln general,
for
those
convalescing from coronaries, if their
symptoms have improved;
after
an
observation
ol
6-24 weeks; provided
that the heart
is
no longer
compromised,
they
may
fly
after sdiscussing with the
doctor. Those
with
severe
angina
requiring
f
requent medication for
control
may
be advised
not
to
fly.
Patients with active infectious diseases
may well spread germs
inside
the cabin
should avoid
flying, so are
pregnant
women close to the delivery (after
32
weeks).
