HEALTH
Seasonal changes do affect the
incidence and relapse patterns
of
disease. Mental disorders
prevail
during springtime
-
seasonal variation
of
pituitary
hormone
secretions
indirectly
lead to
changes
in
the
blood
level of steroids
in
the body, even
as
prolonged high blood steroid
levels
(e.9.,
from
longterm
high-dose steroid
therapy)
may
cause
mental disorders.
The
incidence
of
new
cases
of mental
disorders in Shanghai
peaks during
April and
May,
even those
having
mental disorders already in
remission
may have relapses during this period
of the year. ln
Southern China, mild
climate
is
associated
with
milder
char-
acters whereas the harsh climate
of
the
North
leads
to
harsh characters.
Sichuan's dampness leads to a crav-
ing for very chilly food.
ln
humid
climates, diabetes
is
less
serious
especially in summer as people take
less food; chronic bronchitis,
asthma,
strokes, coronaries, etc.,
are
worse
in
winter. Flu
is
definitely more
common
in
cooler
climates.
Warm
and
humid
weather favors the
grovyth of
fungus on
the
skin.
Arthritic pain
is
worse during
humid weather. Beyond certain limits
of
the
air
temperature, e.9., outside the
limits of 0o to 35o,
death
rates tend
to
increase. As
the elderly
has lesser
sensitivity
to
temperature changes, they
should
take
note
of
the weather fore-
cast
and
be prepared.
