''ECSTASY"
PILLS
HAVE
BROUGHT
TO
YOUNGSTERS
The
name "Ecstasy" or "Eve" are
the street
names
for
Methylene-dioxy-
meth-amphatamine (MDMA)
- a
deriva-
tive of meth-amphetamine, also known
as "speed", "crystal" and "meth",
etc.
These
pills
are popular with participants
in
"raves"
for
enhancing
energy,
endurance, sociability and
sexual
arousal. The original marketing strategy
as an appetite inhibitor was
spoiled
by
such abuse. With the gross misbelieve
about the safety
ol
Ectasy, a thriving
illicit
tralfic
is
sustained.
However,
serious toxicity
occurred
and
87
well-documented deaths related
to
Ecstasy.
These
result
from
high fever,
muscle lysis, wide-spread
blood
clotting, liver
necrosis, gross heart
rhythm inegularities, stroke and
even
drug-related accidents or suicide,
etc.
There is no
margin
at all between the
"recreational dose"
(signif
icantly higher
than the "therapeutic dose" when first
marketed) and the
toxic
dose
range.
Even in survivors from toxic
doses,
permanent physical and
psychiatric
disabilities
may
well prevail. ln
fact,
current evidence still cannot make
an
accurate assessment of the severity/
size
of
the
problem with
the
use
of
these
drugs. Thus, Ecstasy does have
side
efiects serious enough to cause death.
Moreover, medications
with
narrow
safety margins between
the
useful and
the toxic doses are only accepted for
life-saving purposes, e.9., for the
treat-
ment
of
cancer
and certainly
not
for
recreation!
