CONTRADICTORY
VIEWS ON
A
SCIENTISTAND
HIS
SCHOOL OFTHOUGHT
Freud's psychoanalysis was
a
prominent School
in
psychology.
However,
as
his
theories
were often
misinterpreted
or
misquoted, great
controversy prevailed
-
he
had ever
been
the
least welcomed
scientist
in
Germany. Undaunted, he
put
forward
further
academic
theories
and fresh
edification.
He
wrote profusely and pub-
lished
widely.
"Beyond
the
Pleasure
Principle (1920)" described past
plea-
sure and displeasure
experiences
predetermined our present likes and
dislikes. "The lnterpretation
of
Dreams
(1900)" postulated
that
dreams were
part of our wish fulfillment,
just
as day-
dreams were. "The Ego and
the
ld"
gave
details
of
various components of
personality development
- the
"ld":
(unconscious)
giving us
impulses of
aggression
or
sexuality;
the
"Ego":
(conscious) a rational conduit for these
urges and the "Super Ego" helped
us
cope with
the
urges. His theories
on
"hysteria" are very
well
known still and
that on
psychosexual development
comprised of the lollowing stages (and
years of age)
- oral
(0-1);
anal
(1-3);
phallic (3-6); latency
(6-11
)
and genital
(at adolescence).
After
putting forward
his
theory
ol
psychoanalysis in
1900,
he
made significant revisions of
his
own
theories
in
the
post-1920 period. He
is
being criticized
for
overemphasis
on
sexuality and deemed
being
culturally
too specific
to
1gth
Century Victorian
society but his impacts can hardly
be
matched.
