THROMBOSED
ARTERIES TO
THE BRAIN
Stroke
is
a
ruthless
disease.
Some
would
die from
the
attack; even
surviving patients may
lose
the
previ-
ous
quality of
life
-
he may never
be
able to
walk
like before or even unable
to dress himself
or
talk like before. Oth-
ers
may not be able
to
pass urine or
open
the
bowel by themselves
and
even the
strength
to
turn
his body in bed
is lacking. Stroke as a disease affect-
ing
the patency
of
the arlerial supply
to
the
brain may be
of
the thrombotic
(blockage due to
a
thrombus inside the
artery) type
or
the
hemorrhagic (due to
"bursting" of
the
artery) types.
The
former
is
more common, accounting
for
70% of strokes. Signs and symptoms
that facilitate stroke
recognition
are:
slurred speech; inability
to
express;
paralysis
or
numbness
of
1
side of the
body;
unsteady
gait; seeing
double;
sudden blindness; sudden
memory
loss; numbness of
1
side of face;
droop-
ing
of an
angle
of
the
mouth,
etc.
Call
for
an
ambulance
at
once.
Let
the
pa-
tient
lie flat with
the
head turned to the
side; as
the
patient may not be able
to
cough
nor
spit, maintenance
of a
patent
ainvay
is
of paramount importance.
Ef-
fective treatment for thrombosed arter-
ies must start within hours otherwise
permanent
damage
results.
