THE DEVELOPMENT
OF
MOLECULAR
ALTERATION
AND
GENE
THERAPY
ln the
50s,
the
"double
helix"
structure
of
DNA was mapped
out.
Later,
the
genetic code material
of
viruses could
be
incorporated
into the
gene of
the
host.
ln
1972, Berg
of
Stanford University succeeded
in
performing the
fist
recombinant
DNA
technology. ln
1980, Chine
of
UCLA
succeeded in incorporating the genetic
material
of
globulin into
the
bone
marrow
cells
of laboratory
animals
but
was criticized as
"unethical".
Gene
therapy still managed to
"snowball".
ln
1989, Rosenberg finally introduced
a
copy
of a gene
to human
cells.
ln
1990,
Blease
successfully treated
a
4-year
old
girl
with severe combined
immuno-
deficiency by introducing copies of the
missing gene into the white cells
and
reinlused back
to
her - she could
live
like all other
children!
The success
of
these US National lnstitute
of
Health
workers had led
to
numerous
gene
therapy attempts,
mostly
for
cancer
treatment.
ln
China, gene therapy
research is belated
but has
now
been
classified as National keynote research
- in Shanghai, gene therapy for a brain
cancer (glioma)
is
already
in
the
final
phase of research.
