FOCUSSED
X.RAYS
FOR
CANCERTREATMENT
X-rays have been discovered
for
over
a
hundred years and, soon found
to be useful
for
tumours
(cancers).
But
the clinical method of application
has
not
changed
-
relatively
large portals
are
employed
to treat a
"cylinder" of the
body tissue that includes the cancer
so
that a
lot of normal
tissues
outside the
spherical tumour are
included.
Cure
may
be at the
expense
of
body
function
sacrifice.
Focussed
radio-
therapy
has been around
for
50
years
but the application has
been very
limited and no
impact
on
cancer
treatment is possible until the advent
of
modern computers
and
precise
body-section imaging,
e.9., CT
and
MRI
scans.
During
the recent
5 years, the
technology of
focussed
radiotherapy
has
also
been implemented on
the
common-garden linear accelerator and
cost has come down
considerably.
Dr
Tsao
is
one of
the
pioneers
in
this field
and he has implemented, in a brand-
new department, the full-scale use of
focussed X-ray technology especially
for cancers that are commonly found
in
this part
of
the
world.
Recently, he has
done
a
feasibility
study
for multiple brain
secondaries (spread
from
elsewhere).
