PSYCHO.THERAPY
FOR
DIABETES
Psychological stress and neryous
tension can
have
a close relationship
with
diabetes. Under prolonged psycho-
logical stress, latent diabetics can have
an accelerated development into frank
diabetes; diabetics get worse during
infection, physical
or
mental trauma,
operation; in normal persons,
transient
high blood sugar can also occur
but
are
readily
reversible
after the
stress.
lmproving
the
emotional state would
overcome
the
negative
emotional
reactions due
to
diabetes,
otherwise
a
vicious cycle forms
- il
so,
psycho-
therapy is required
to
break
it.
As the
complications of diabetes are
often
worse than the disease itself,
the
psychological burden
or
even distur-
bance should be managed
effectively.
Biological feedback
and
relaxation
methods
can be
used to
tackle
undue
worries and tension; explanation, ratio-
nalization, diversion, comforting and
psychological
support
are
very
useful.
Formation of
support groups amongst
patients would provide convincing first-
hand experience and mutual support.
Thus, through psycho{herapy, diabetic
patients are well
prepared
-
even
in
case
they
have
complications,
they
would not
go into
a
vicious cycle.
