EDEMA AND HEALTH
Edema or swelling due to water collection in parts of the body should be differentiated from obesity or fat collection in the
tissues. Edematous tissues would be depressed by finger pressure for about 15 seconds but fatty tissues would not. The
capillary wall is a semi-permeable membrane with considerable osmotic properties. Normally, a good balance of fluid exchange
exists between plasma inside the capillaries and water in the tissues – allowing water and electrolytes to pass through the
membrane freely. As proteins of plasma cannot pass through the membrane, their existence contributes to the colloid
osmotic pressure in the capillaries. Inflammation results in a higher permeability of the capillary wall due to release of histamine
and serotonin, etc.; kinin and prostaglandin of allergies, etc.; increase of capillary hydrostatic pressure: e.g., heart failure,
cirrhosis of the liver, etc.; decrease of plasma proteins, e.g., malnutrition, loss through the urine in kidney diseases, or the liver
fails to synthesize. Reduction of lymphatic flow also leads to edema. Take less salt; avoid obesity; have regular exercises;
avoid prolonged sitting or try massaging.
