The term "hypochondriac"
refers
to
undue
concern
with
one's
health,
so
much so that
the sufierer starts to
image
cer-
tain diseases. This
is
unhealthy
because abnormal psychologi-
cal
reactions
can
result
in
some
physical symptoms. Such men-
tal
imbalances require advice
from
a
clinical psychologist. For
the elderly, a contributory
ele-
ment
is
loneness
that
com-
pounds elderly problems.
Be-
reavement
may have
significant
effects despite the deceased
is
not closely
related.
The family
should
be on
the
alert
for
such
disturbances. On
the
positive
side, it
is
a good policy
to
have
routine
body check
ups
regularly.
Assist
the
patient to
face
death and
dying,
in the
right
perspective.
For
the
young
patient, the main factor may
be
an obsession for good looks to
the extreme, e.9., unnecessary
plastic
surgery. When minor
body defects
lead
to
profound
mental
distress, or,
worse
still,
when the defect
is
only
imagi-
native but
the
distress is very
real,
consult
a
clinical psycholo-
gist
as
this
is a
form
of
obses-
sive
compulsive
syndrome.
