American solders died
mysteriously.
The
US Center for Disease Control found the cause was
"pig
flu".
They feared
a
similar disastrous world influenza pandemic as that originating from Spain
in
the year
1918
when
2O-4O
million people had died (also caused
by
"pig flu", current WHO data).
Moreover,
as none of
the
US
soldiers had
ever
contacted any pigs, human-to-human spread seemed
very
real,
despite
the
lack of
scientific
evidence.
After a
heated
debate, President
Ford decided
to allocate $135
million for
an
all-nation
vaccine program
for
"pig flu".
However,
there were,
in
fact, no signs
of
any possible influenza pandemic
at all;
instead, complications of the
vaccination
had since occurred, e.9., acute febrile
polyneuritis
(multiple nerve
damage due to a reaction to the
vaccine);facial
palsies, and even death attributable to the vaccine, albeit
in
very small
numbers. Thus,
after 7
months of
the vaccination
program, it
ended
prematurely.
ln
1997, Hong
Kong
had
the
1st
human case
of
"bird
flu";soon,
the vaccine made from
the
attenuated virus was prepared.
The
required decision
is
when to vaccinate.
One
month has
to
lapse after vaccination before the full protec-
tion is
effective. Moreover,
there are different sub-types
having
subtle differences among viruses causing
pandemics
so
that the vaccine developed may not
have
full protection. Specialist opinion favors initial vacci-
nation for those
at high
risk, e.9., those associated with chicken farming, wholesale
and
retail trades.
