TEN
DIETARY PRINCIPLES FOR
PREVENTION
OF
"RICH MAN'S
DISEASES"
Obesity,
diabetes,
hypertension,
high cholesterol are so-called
"rich
man's diseases"
-
they
are
related
to the
"good life" but
are
like a time
bomb
that
should be defused by
di-
etary
regulation.
WHO recommends
restricting
daily salt
intake
to
3-5
grams but most Chinese
take
more
than that. Artificial sweeteners are encouraged
-
sweeter than sugar but
with
less calories. A bottle
of
milk
supplies calcium
-
especially
relevant for growing children.
An
egg a day
supplies good
nutrition,
organic
salt
and
vitamins.
Fish oils
contain
unsaturated
fatty
acids,
the function
of
docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA)
is
well
known,
especially
prevention
of coronaries
and stroke. Fat intake
should be
reduced
to the
minimum;
rather,
take 500 gram of vegetables daily; even soya bean and
its
products can prevent cancer and vascular
diseases. As the
taste of
mushrooms is
good,
most
Chinese
people would only
consume
mushrooms as
a
flavor enhancer
-
this
habit should change
to
that of consuming mushrooms as
a
food item.
For
kids, rice
is
an important source of energy,
othenruise
normal development
is affected.
The eating habit
of
most Chinese
used
to
be good: fresh and natural food are often taken
without
much
refining;sugar
and
dairy
products are
taken
sparingly;
tea
is
taken
instead;
meat
is
taken
sparingly
and vegetable
oils are
used for cooking. This
good formula serves as prevention
of
hardening of
arteries,
cancer and hypertension.
