MYSTERY
OF
MADAME SOONG
MEI.LING'S
LONGEVITY
Mdm
Soong
(Chiang Kai-shek's
widow),
passed away peacefully at
the
age
of
106
in
April 2004
at her
New York
apartment. Her
life
was literally fabulous and was named the "Eternal First Lady". Despite
her
wealth, she believed in hard work;
it
would make her
feelyounger,
smarter and more vigorous. She was
very
close
to
her husband;together, they
had
discussed and managed
many
national strategies.
However, her
unhappiness had
also
been profound,
e.9.,
upon
the
death
of
her husband, her son Chiang Ching-kuo
immediately stripped her
of all
authority and manpower. lnitially very furious, she soon learned
to
take
it
easy
and affirmed with Apostle
Paul
that she likewise
had
fought her battle in her
life. For
other less
profound
unhappiness,
she would
just "talk
it over"
with someone close. ln
USA,
her
life
was very
regular;
she
read
through
New York
newspapers; learned
to
play
the
piano,
to
paint Chinese paintings
and
to
practice
her
Chinese calligraphy. She also gave up smoking altogether. Even her make up items
were
not expensive at
all, some of
them she
made her own. She
thought cosmetics
were for
those yearning for
unrealistic vanity
and youthfulness. Everyday, 2 young female nurses of the Veterans General Hospital used
to
massage her
whole
body.
She
took fruits
and
fresh
vegetables all the
time,
with
the occasional
meat but hardly any fatty
food. Maintaining her
figure,
she was
described
as
a
"beauty
with
a
cat's
belly".
