THE 4 MILESTONES
OF
MANAGING CORONARIES
Each
year there
are
13 million
people
dying
from diseases
of
the
blood
vessels of
the
heart, of these,
coronaries are
the
most
common
causes.
ln
the
US
alone, each
year,
there are
3/a
million cases of
coronar-
ies requiring emergency treatment
in
hospitals;
even
for the most
benign
form
-
angina,
a
few million
people
are
suffering from
it.
ln China, with
the
higher
living
standards, the incidence
rate of
coronaries also rising
steadily.
Trinitro-glycerine
was the
first milestone
for mild arterial
insufficiencies.
As
from
the 60s, coronary by-pass was avail-
able but this
is
still
a
major
operation.
ln
the 70s, cardiac catheterisation
- a
fine catheter
is
introduced
all
the
way
to
the blood vessels supplying
the
heart
and, with the controlled expansion of a
balloon,
opens
up the narrowed artery
lumen,
obviating
open
operation.
The
4th milestone
is
to use laser to attempt
to stimulate the
groMh
of new vessels
by
creating artificial passages
in heart
muscles
lacking blood
supply.
This
new
technology
may
turn out
to
be
a
simple but effective method of treating
coronaries.
