INVESTIGATIONS
Although
in
modern
medical
practice, laboratory
investigations
are common, these would
require the
interpretation
of
the doctor according
to the clinical findings. Moreover, the
test
results
would only
help
to
investi-
gate a certain aspect of the disease.
As
even
in
normal subjects,
there
iS
a wide
range
of the test
results, the
interpretation of "borderline
results"
must
be
done
by
qualified
profession-
als. ln
the
blood, there
are
blood cells:
white and
red
ones and platelets. lnsuf-
ficient red cells signify anaemia. As the
commonest cause
is
gastro-intestinal
bleeding,
the stool
may
also
be
tested
for "occult"
blood.
White
cells
are
responsible
for
defending
against
bacterial
invasion - hence
the increased
white
cell
counts during an
acute
infection; a decreased white cell count
may be due
to
chemotherapy(anti-
cancer drugs). Another more serious
but
much
less
common disease
detectable
by
the blood cell
examina-
tion is
leukaemia(blood
cancer).
lf
platelets are inadequate, spontaneous
bleeding may occur. Significant protein
in the urine usually signifies
kidney
disorder and
further
investigations
are definitely required.
