Blindness of both eyes is
a
main
complication
of
diabetes. Diabetics with
over
10
years'
history
usually
have
variable degrees of
retinal
changes
of
the
eye.
All
diabetics should
check
their eyes every
year.
Strict control of
diabetes helps
to
stabilize
retinal
changes
-
if
control of diabetes
is
prompt after diagnosis,
blindness
seldom occurs. Specifically,
fasting
blood sugar should be around 6"orlL
and 2 hour after food,

lf diabetes
is
complicated
by
hypertension, the
risk
of blindness
would
increase.
The
ideal
blood pressure is
130/uo.
Cataract,
due
to opacity of the lens, is more common
and progressive
in
diabetics.
Avoid
dehydration; wear sun glasses when
going
out;
take sufficient vitamin C,
e.g.
0.4 G per dose.

used to
cauterize
it. Lens replacement
for cataracts can
also
be considered
in
obvious
cases.
Hence, do
not
wait
until the vision
deteriorates
before
something
is
done on the
eyes

better than cure.
