FACTORS
AFFECTING
THE CONTROL OF DIABETES
Diabetes
is
a
chronic
but
progres-
sive disease
of
metabolism
that
has
hereditary tendencies. Since
the
clinical
use
of
insulin, efficacy
of
treatment
is
greatly improved.
However,
as the cause of the primary type
of
diabetes
is still
not very
clear,
presently, the treatment results
are
still
not ideal.
Moreover,
opinion
on
drug treatment and food and beverage
management
are
still
diverse.
The
treatment
of
diabetes
is a
long-term
job
that
demands attention
to
detail.
During
pregnancy,
the requirement of
insulin
may increase
alter
the
first
3
months; only
to
return
to
normal 3-5
days
after
delivery. During
surgical
operations, insulin requirements also
increase; infections
or
stress,
e.9.,
coro-
naries,
severe
trauma, burns
etc. also
have a similar etfect. lnsulin should be
used with the greatest care. Long-term
use of thiazides may lead
to
raised
blood sugar
levels;
the
use of growth
hormone, steroids or even oral contra-
ceptives
may also
trigger otf diabetes
in
latent diabetics. When
managing
diabetes, all these factors should
be
taken
into consideration.
