THE NEWLY
DISCOVERED
ROLE OF
HIGH
TRIGLYCERIDES IN
DISEASE
For
a
long while,
the
hardening
of
arteries
(atherosclerosis)
was
thought
to
be related
to
the total cho-
lesterol level
in
the
blood.
Recently,
the
role of high and low density cholesterol
as well as triglycerides are
better
known.
People with high levels
of
trig-
lycerides and low levels of high-density
cholesterol are at high risk of getting
coronary artery disease, especially
in
females.
Low-density
cholesterol
had
already
been found
to
be
directly related
to atherosclerosis
development.
Re-
cently, the lowest density cholesterol
together with high levels ol triglycerides
has been found to be the powerful
fac-
torlor
atherosclerosis.
As
diabetes can
lead
to
high
triglyceride levels,
it must
be
well
controlled.
Hypertensives
should avoid taking thiazide diuretics
and beta blockers
as
they may
raise
the
level of
triglycerides. The
most impor-
tant
factor
by far
is
the
body
weight con-
trol.
Take
less
fat, sweets,
alcohol.
Take
more
vegetables
and
fruits
-
the
anti-oxident vitamins (C and
E) can
lower
the
damage
to
blood vessels.
Finally,
take
regular daily exercises.
