THEWAY TO NOURISH LIFE AND PREVENT INFECTIONS IN SPRING
In spring, one's temperament and emotions have to be controlled; lest the liver "qi" is entrapped; various organ functions
become chaotic; diseases ensue - especially for those with mental disorders, liver diseases and hypertension. Maintain a
delightful mentality; an optimistic lookout for better flow of the liver "qi" and a stronger physique. While creatures flourishing and
flowers blooming in spring, we should also take appropriate physical activities, like the description in our Canon of Internal
Medicine, "take a good night's sleep and rise early and stroll around in the courtyard". However, these should be in moderation.
Qiu Chu-ji, Yuan Dynasty, opined that in spring, food should be less sour and sweeter. According to the "Qian Jin Fang" by Sun
Si-miao, Tang Dynasty, during spring, one should take more leek. Moreover, fresh cruciferous vegetables, for example, broccoli
and Brussels sprouts are rich in vitamin C; carrots and spinach are rich in vitamin A. Zhou Xuan of Yuan Dynasty in his "Shouqin
yanglao xin shu" advocates gradual clothing change in the rather unpredictable spring climate, lest we catch a cold - especially
the elderly.
