KNIFE:
A
NEW TECHNIQUE
FOR
MALIGNANCY
The
3
standard modalities
of malignant tumors: surgery,
radiation therapy and chemo-
therapy may not always
be
applicable,
e.9.,
when the
risk
of
operation
is
too
high,
or
when
the
general condition
is
poor,
as
is
often
the case
in
late
cancer
patients.
Argon-helium
"knife" has no knife
at
all.
Through
probes inserted into
tissue, argon gas
is employed
to achieve very
rapid and low-
temperature freezing;
helium
gas,
a
rapid
thaw
process - af-
ter 2 such cycles of freeze and
thaw,
liquefaction necrosis of
treated
tissue
results, signify-
ing
complete tissue destruction
akin
to
knife
cutting
but with-
out bleeding. Placement preci-
sion is
high.
As the argon-he-
lium
"knife" works
uniquely
through skin insertions,
excel-
lent
insulation prevents
cold
damage
to
tissues
through
which
the
probe goes.
Such
treatments may be combined
with
radiation and
chemo-
therapy
but
care must
be
taken
not
to treat
near large
blood
vessels or
nerves.
Thus,
the
argon-helium
"knife" seems to
be
a
reasonable alternative
to surgery
and
should
be con-
sidered whenever surgical
ex-
cisions
of
cancers
are
not
applicable.
