MANAGING
A
HYPERTENSIVE AT
HOME
As all hypertensives require daily blood pressure lowering drugs and regular blood pressure monitoring
even at home,
it
pays to do
it
properly. The
WHO
upper limit of blood pressure
is
140 (upper) and 90 (lower)
mm Hg. lf electronic blood pressure meters are used, they should be compared
at
times with a mercury one
and note
the
difference in reading.
The
role
of
blood pressure lowering machines is supplementary
and
cannot
replace
the
role of
medications.
Watch out for
symptoms
of
severe, uncontrolled hypertension:
nausea,
vomiting, severe headache,
or
even blurring
of
vision. Rush to hospital. Signs
of
coronaries are: severe pain
in
the chest
front,
(may radiate to
the
neck or
the
upper limb); chest discomfort, pallor, sweating,
etc.
lf
available,
try
nitroglycerine taken underneath the tongue
-
the
pain
of angina (but
not of
coronaries) would
be
relieved promptly.
lf
sudden, severe headache, nausea
and
vomiting and limb paralysis occurs, this
is
stroke;
lay
them down flat with the
head
to the
side
to
prevent aspiration of vomited food
into
the lungs.
Rush all
coronaries and strokes
to
hospital. Hypertensives
are
to
relax well, to give
up
smoking, drinking and too salty
I
'tally
food.
Regular bowels and
eating
-
a
balanced
diet
(always
with vegetables
and
fruits) and
moderate
exercises are
advised.
To
detect hypertension early, regular blood pressure
taking
of all grown ups is man-
datory as
early
hypertension has no
symptoms
at
all!
