VARIOUS
TYPES OF
BABIES'CRIES
Although very young babies cry
due
to
instinct,
older
babies
cry with
a
reason.
A
"physiological"
cry
is com-
monest and
due
to
hunger or
thirst
- it
is
often loud
but
the
baby appears
per
fectly normal otheruise.
The
head may
rotate frequently to each side
in
turn,
however, as
soon
as
the
mouth
touches
the nipple, the cry stops and sucking
starts
at once.
Babies also cry because
of
discomfort,
e.9.,
too warm, too
cold
or irritated
by
an
insect
bite,
etc.
However,
the most important cries to
recognize are the
those
due to
sickness:
crying when feeding
may be due
to sore
throat
or
sore tongue
that
hurts
on
swallowing; cries
that
come
with
the
hand
reaching for
the ear
may be
due
to earache, ear infection or even an in-
sect in the ear canal; cries
that
are
hoarse may
be
due to infection
of
the
voice
box
or
even
asthma;
cries
that are
rapid and accompanied
by
a
blue
tinge
of the face may be due
to
congenital
heart
disease;
crying during
bowel
opening
may
be due
to
hard stools;
cries that are intermittent,
with
the body
curling up and associated with pallor
of
the face
may be due
to
spasms of the
gut.
