EPIDEMICS
This spring
saw

new viral
epidemic in
Guangzhou
and
nearby
Guangdong: severe atypical respiratory
syndrome
(SARS).

bacteria,
virus

organisms; route
of
spread,
e.9.,
droplet, water &
food,
insects,
and
blood,
etc.;
infectivity
of
humans, e.9.,
a lack
of immunity
or
antibodies against
the infection
source.
Although infections
like the smallpox is now
eliminated;
others like AIDS, hepatitis, influenza,
tuberculosis,
malaria
and
Dengue
fever,
etc.
are
still
around,
let
alone
new
ones.
There were several major epidemics
in
the world.
During
this spring
time,
infections spread readily again and we
must be prepared for some well-known
infections.
Endemic meningitis
is
caused
by
the bacteria meningococcus
and spreads
via the
inhalation
of
droplets, especially with drastic climatic
changes of spring. Hepatitis A spreads
through
lhe
oral-fecal route and
even
sea
lood
may be
contaminated.
Pertusis commonly affecting children
is
caused
by
the
bacteria B. pertusis and
spreads
by
droplets. Mumps
is
a
viral
infection of the parotid glands; spread-
ing by droplets, it may also infect the
testis causing
sterility.
Avoid congested
places:
diphtheria,
mumps and menin-
gitis
commonly spread by
droplets;
good
air
circulation, sun
exposure,
moderate exercises,
a
balanced diet
and rest; avoid
raw
food,
especially
seafood; clean environment prevents
breeding of
rats
and cockroaches.
Take
vaccination against hepatitis
A
and
diphtheria + pertusis
+
tetanus
(DPT).
