THE
FEROCIOUS
STROKE
The worst stroke
is
when
a
cere-
bral
artery
in
the
brain substance liter-
ally bursts. lt usually occurs in patients
past
middle
age. Even
though
the
stroke
rates
of
China
are
lower
than
in West-
ern Countries, it is still the
no. 1
killer
amongst
patients past
the
middle age.
Early signs are sudden numbness or
weakness of
the
face
or the
limbs,
twisted corner
of
the mouth and speech
difliculties;
dizziness
and
bad
headache. ln severe cases, the patient
may
lose consciousness, fall down or
start
to
vomit.
For
these very
acute
cases, before medical attention
is
available, the
patient should
be
propped
up gently, the
collar
loosened
and
any
dentures taken
out; for
those who
are
vomiting, take care
to
place the
head
towards one
side to avoid
aspiration
into
the
lungs;
also
make sure that
the
air-
ways are clear by raising the back of
the
jaw
bone in
the
direction of
the
mouth to
prevent
the tongue from fall-
ing back
and
blocking
the
airway. Pre-
vention
of stroke
includes
careful
lood
and drink; control
of
excessive emo-
tional
ups and downs; regular life-style
and
avoiding excessive tiredness.
Above all, acquire a friendly and ami-
cable
attitude as
lar
as
feasible
-
it
would
go
a
long
way
toward prevention
of
stroke.
