Stereotactic radiosurgery requires
4
pins
to fix a
metal
lrame
to
the
skull
bone so
that subsequent
CT scanning
can then capture
the
relationship
be-
tween the markers
on the
frame
and
the
lesion inside to facilitate its destruction
by
a
very
precise and
focussed
radiation.
The so-called
"frameless"
form
of
radlosurgery is an attempted
improvement
and consisls of 4
skin
markers taped to the patient's scalp in-
stead
of
the classical metal
frame.
This
is a true
account
of
using such
a
frameless set
to
perform the fluid aspi-
ration of
a
cyst
inside
the patient's
brain.
As the procedure depends on image-
guidance,
it may
thus be named as "ro-
botic surgery". Nevertheless,
a
burr-
hole of
the
size of a
coin
is
opened
by
the
neurosurgeon
-
the "robotic" con-
trol
is
the precise direction and
depth
of the needle for the fluid aspiration
-
no more guesswork
by
the neurosur-
geon
but
guided
by
computerthat
has
already captured
the
relationship
of
the
4
scalp markers and the cyst inside the
brain.Thus,
by noting
the external
po-
sition of the 4 scalp markers, the com-
puter
is
able to determine the direction
and
depth of
the
needle for aspiration,
as based on scanned images already
captured
before
the
operation.
