TELE-MEDICINE:
PROSPECTS

HIDDEN
CONCERNS
Recently, there has been consid-
erable advances
in
tele-conferencing,
consultation, joint-consultation
and
medical
image
transfer from centre
lo
centre. Usually, these
are done
through
e-mails and
the internet.
Such
ad-
vances have enabled the application
of
some valuable expertise on certain un-
common
diseases types,
conditions
and complications,
etc
to
go beyond
the
geographic
limitations.
The
medical
pro-
fession also gained wider experience
and
scope
-
a
welcome
move.
However,
problems also arise,
e.9.,
what category does tele-medicine
be-
long
to?
How
to
collect
the fees?
How
about
medicolegal
issues?
Privacy
and
confidentiality issues?
Even
the elec-
tronic medical record
has problems
of
ownership,
right of
access, etc.
ln
the
year
1999, the
first tele-surgery
in
the
world was first
performed
-
this
is like
an extension
of
endoscopic
surgery.
As
China
is
such
a
vast country with a
huge
rural area, the
development
of tele-
medicine
has
great implications,
esp.
when the traffic network
is
still
not
fully
developed
-
clearly, the traditional mo-
bile
clinic
is
unable to meet the require-
ments
of
modern
society.
Tele-medicine
will
take
up a
much more important role
in modern medicine
in
the
near future.
