DRINKING
Once
a Chinese
Emperor sent
someone
to get a bottle
of
wine that
was
supposed to contain a longevity potion
that would make one into a
fairy.
On
the way back, a Senior Minister inter-
cepted and drank it
all.
The Emperor
wished
to
kill him
lor
it
but
the Senior
Minister
pleaded
that
if
the wine
did
contain the potion,
he
would
not
die, but
if
it
did not,
he
would die
in
vain.
The
Emperor finally took
the
message and
excused
him.
ln Chinese history, the
poet Li
Bai
was
a
"fairy
godfather of
poetry' who very otten
got
drunk.
Even
though
he
was "flying with fairies",
he
could
write
impromptu poetry
that
was
so good that very few other could
ever
emulate even
in
their most sober state.
An alcoholic beverage etfectively
re-
moves inhibition
that
may be a
hin-
drance to successful
deals.
Of course,
such "Dutch courage", visual and coor-
dination impairment, prolonged reaction
time
make driving very
dangerous.
Strong spirits also lead to gastritis, cir-
rhosis of
the
liver
and even
cancer.
Ex-
cessive vomiting may end
up with
chok-
ing and even death from suflocation.
