WHAT CAN BE
DONE IN
CASE
OF HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE
There is now a confusing
range
of
drugs
for
high blood pressure. As
such treatments are so
long
term, even
the laymen should acquire some knowl-
edge
on
these
so
that they can cooper-
ate
better with
their
doctor.
The
principles of treatment is
to
maintain
long-term control
of
the blood pressure
to a
reasonable
but nol
necessarily
to
the
"normal"
level;
to
minimize compli-
cations to the heart, brain, kidneys and
the
eyes; to treat
the
primary
cause
(it
any)
of the
high blood pressure;
to
educate the patient on
preventive
measures. Drugs prescribed usually
would not be aimed at producing too
drastic
or too
rapid
a
drop
of
the
pressure, otherwise
the
already-
compromised
vital
organs
may
be
aggravated. Different categories
of
drugs are available: diuretics act
on
producing more urine (to
get
rid
of
excessive sodium
but
potassium
supplements may
be
required);
beta-blockers act mainly on slowing the
heart beat
and
reducing
its
output;
vasodilators act
to
relax
the
peripheral
blood vessels; ACE
(angiotensin-
converting enzyme) inhibitors reduce
the
action
of
renin
(that
causes
peripheral vessel
constriction).
Knowledge
is power but
self-prescrip-
tion
is disastrous!
