BENIGN
PROSTATIC
HYPERTROPHY BRINGS
TROUBLETO MALE
SENIOR
CITIZENS
Benign prostatic hypertrophy
is a
common but indolent enlargement of
the
prostate
gland
(situated
just
be-
neath
the
urinary bladder). Sexual hor-
mone imbalance
is
the
likely
cause.The
prostate
is
responsible
for
secreting flu-
ids for
the nutrition
and
transportation
of sperms. As
the
urethra
(the
lower
urinary passage) goes through
the
prostate, the enlargement
of
which
may
narrow the
urethra.
The patient has tre-
quency,
difliculty or hesitancy
in pass-
ing urine and frequency
at
night. The
doctor would be able
to
examine the
prostate using
his
figure
in
the
back
passage. Ultrasound,
contrast
X-ray
studies of
the
bladder
and
magnetic
resonance imaging are common imag-
ing
procedures. Usually,
the necessity
lor operation
is
determined
by
the
se-
verity of the obstruction - sometimes,
this is also reflected
by
the
residual
urine volume and other
urodynamic
(mechanical derangement of urination)
studies.The cystoscope
is
a lighted
tube
to
look
at the
bladder
inner
surface.
Operations can easily be performed
by
electrical
cautery
-
without
open
wounds. Laser and
heat
treatments are
also used. Eflective management
im-
proves the quality of old people.
