AND
PREVENTION
Asthma
is
a serious
disease
related to
a
hypersensitivity reaction
of
the small bronchi
in
the
lung.
lt
is
more
common in developed countries
and
in cities. Globally,
there is
a
trend
of
increasing incidence
and
death
rate:
the
number of
patients
is
approximately
100
million.
ln
China, the incidence
rate
of
asthma
in
children
has risen
from
1.'19%
in
1990
to
3.4o/o
in
1995
and probably
10
million patients
exist.
The underly-
ing cause for
the
increase
is
still
being
investigated but is probably
related
to
industrialization and better quality
of life
(increased
sea food
consumption,
keeping of
carpets,
pets, flowers etc
in
the
house). Training
and
updating
medical professionals are required,
e.g.
to
remind
them that early stages
of
asthma
may
only
have
cough
and
without any shortness
ol
breath. Public
education
is
just as
important: some
people
believe
that
asthma would
sooner
or
later clear itself;
others
believe
that
asthma
just
cannot
be
controlled. Without medication,
the
patient's life is at risk during a
severe
attack.
Frequent
attacks would
also
cause structural damage to
the
lungs.
