Editor
On 7th Oct., 98,
Mr.
C. W.
Tung,
Chief
Executive
of the
Hong
Kong
Special Administrative
Region
announced
in
the
Legislative Council
that
he would
develop
Hong
Kong
into an
international center
for
Chinese medicine.
Hong
Kong possesses very
favourable conditions
to
become
such
a
center.
lt
is a
focal
point and
interchanging bridge between China
and Taiwan.
Furthermore,
it
can
become
a clinical studies center
for
the integration of Chinese
and
Western
medicine
in
treating various difficult
and
problematic diseases.
The editor
paid
a
special
visit to
Professor
K. C.
Chen who
is
a
Fellow
of
the
Chinese Academy
of
Science
and a
first
generation expert in
the
integration
ol
Chinese
and Western
medicine.
Professor
Chen
points out that
China has an extremely rich heritage
in
medicinal culture using
a
large
number
of
natural herbs and various
minerals
to treat a wide
range
of
diseases. The coverage
is
very
extensive
in terms
of
both
history,
geographical areas, as
well
as
the
size of its population. Besides, ancient
scripts
and
compendiums on
Chinese
medicine are plentiful and authoritative.
Many Chinese doctors and herbalists
still
rely on
them
for
reference,
for
teaching
and for
further
studies.
Today,
China
is
still the treasure
house
of
over 12,870
kinds of natural
medicines.
The cultivation of
herbal
plants extends over 5,800,000 acres
and production
bases exceeds 600.
It is
Professor Chen's view
that
to
develop
and create
new
horizons
in
Chinese medicine
is a
social
and
ethnic responsibility that the Chinese
cannot shed.
