BRAIN
EMBOLISM.ESSENTALLY
A
MANIFESTATION
OF
HEART DISEASE
The stroke
syndrome,
a
term
which connotes the sudden and dra-
matic
development
of
a
focal neurologic
deficit, is not a condition unfamilar to
the
lay
populations.
By
pathologic proc-
ess, it may
be
described according to
its grosser aspects-thrombosis, embo-
lism, rupture of a vessel of the
brain,
etc. However, brain embolism
is
essen-
tially a
manifestation
of
heart disease.
Many kinds
of heart
disease
can
be
associated
with
embolism,
the
com-
monest direct cause
is
chronic atrial
fi-
brillation due to atherosclerotic or rheu-
matic
heart disease,
the source
of
the
embolus being mural thrombus depos-
ited
within the atrial appendage. Rheu-
matic
heart
disease
is presently
asso-
ciated with embolism
in
about 90
per-
cent
of
cases. lt
may
lrequently occur
in young adults. The
clinical
picture,
treatment and prognosis have
been
briefly discussed in
the
present paper,
and
the
need for special care in pre-
venting emboli in all patients with rheu-
matic heart disease should
be
appreci-
ated by all physicians.
