PROSTATITIS
This term
is
loosely used to desig-
nate
various inflammatory conditions af-
fecting
the
prostate, a small
gland
around the exit
of
the
bladder.
These
include acute
and
chronic inlections with
specific
bacteria
and,
more commonly,
instances are signs and symptoms
ol
prostatic inflammation are present but
no specific organisms can be detected.
Patients
in
this category usually
have
low-back pain and perineal or
testicular
discomfort.
They may have microscopic
pyuria or hematuria without and other
evidence
of
genitourinary
diseases.
Such patients are generally treated
symptomatically by prostatic massage
and
warm
sitz baths, but many of them
are given antibiotics, with
various results.
