CARCINOMA

WHO

1982,
WHO
held
a
expert meet-
ing in ltaly, and an anti-cancerous pain
therapy was suggested
by
the expert
committee during
the
meeting.
The
committee
proposed that there should
be
a
worldwide therapeutic
target
of
making painless
for all
the patients with
cancers
in
the year of
2000.
For
this
reason, twenty-eight experts
in
Medicine, Pharmacology and
Nursing
science had been invited
by
WHO to
discuss and work
out
a
three-step pain-
relief therapy in order
to
help
more
patients with advance cancers in many
more geographic areas
and
regions
of
the
world.
Briefly,
nonnarcotic
analgesics should
be
the
first
choice
for
patients
with
mild
to
moderate
degree
of
pain
due
to
cancer; secondly more
powerful analgesics such
as
narcotics
are required for more severe
pain.
The
drugs included in
this
category
are
morphine, opium, heroin and codeine
etc.
lntractable pain due to incurable
disease, such as metastatic carcinoma,
is
one
of
the most difficult therapeutic
problems.
As
a
role, one
resorts to
narcotic drugs
because of their strong
analgesic action.
